Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.
He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.
He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

Canada Summer Jobs Program announced
for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor
Ottawa, February 5, 2008
Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor advises that the Canada Summer Jobs Program has again been announced by Service Canada for 2008. Simms says we are bringing $1.2 million to this riding of Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor alone.
“For many students and groups,” stated Simms, “this program has been an integral part of employment assistance to students during the summer months. It is also vital to organizations and communities to allow them to carry out their summer programs”.
In 2007 this Conservative government changed the eligibility criteria and many groups were denied funding. Following a public outcry from my riding and across Canada, the government changed its criteria in midstream and applications originally denied funding, received approval.
“I am calling on government, this year, to get it right the first time and reflect the needs of rural communities during the Service Canada application assessment process” said Simms. “I would like to see the management of the program brought back to the local offices where the summer programs have been successfully administered for over two decades”.
Simms encourages all stakeholders interested in security funding for student workers to complete and submit the application package immediately and in any case before the deadline of February 29, 2008. Late submissions will not be considered. Application forms and the National Guide for Applicants are available online at servicecanada.gc.ca or at any Service Canada Centre. Employers will be able to submit their applications online, by mail, by fax or in person at any Service Canada Centre.
