Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.
He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.
He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

IT TAKES A COUNTRY: Ken Dryden in Gander on cross-country
National Anti-Poverty Tour
Gander, February 14, 2008
Ken Dryden, Chair of the Liberal Caucus Social Development Committee will be holding a roundtable discussion on poverty in Gander. This will take place at the Gander Lions Club on Saturday, February 23rd at 10:00 a.m. This session is part of Mr. Dryden’s cross Canada tour to engage Canadians with “It Takes a Country”, a national call to action against poverty.
“It’s just not right that so many Canadians live in poverty. Poverty is a life, your life as you experience it, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Taking on poverty is hard, takes time, has lots of ups and downs,”said Mr. Dryden. “It means you truly have to believe that taking a big bite out of poverty really matters. It takes an entire country to fight this fight and it needs to be fought. Because we’re better than this. Canada is better than this”.
“I recognize and commend the volunteer emergency responders for the vital roles they play in fire prevention, safety, and saving lives in our communities”, said Simms. “The passing of Bill C-219 will be a small way of recognizing their efforts because one could never put a dollar figure on the service these volunteers carry out in their communities”.
MP Scott Simms will host the session with Mr. Dryden and invites all stakeholders, organizations and community interest groups to come and join in the session. “This is an opportunity to have input on one of the most important issues facing our country today - Poverty” says Simms. “There are many people in our province affected by poverty, which is everyone’s concern, and I look forward to a full discussion on the subject.”
In November, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion announced his “30-50 Plan to Reduce Poverty” in Canada. The plan sets firm targets to cut poverty by 30 per cent and child poverty by 50 percent within the first five years of a Liberal government. Mr. Dryden has traveled across the country talking with and listening to Canadians about this national challenge.
