Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.

He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.

He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

Simms puts motion before the House of Commons

February 28, 2007
Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor and Liberal Opposition Critic for Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that he will be putting forward a motion in Parliament calling for a ban on the importation of deer and boar products from Germany.

Simms stated, “This is something that I have been considering since last fall and I was awaiting the German Parliament’s next step before proceeding with my motion.” This past Monday Germany’s agriculture minister announced plans to introduce a bill to prohibit the importation of all seal products from Canada.

In Germany 1.2 million deer and over 500,000 boar are cruelly slaughtered annually, most of which are killed for sport. If the German agriculture minister is going to take a high moral stand with respect to Canada’s legitimate seal hunt, then they should look in their own back yard first.

The seal hunt in Canada is highly regulated and closely monitored, unlike the hunt for deer and wild boar in Germany, which is carried out under slack licensing controls, with no training requirements for hunters.

As a parliamentarian representing thousands of sealers in my riding, I am exasperated by the actions of select parliamentarians from European countries who are being led by the slanted views of animal rights groups. Despite the many efforts expended trying to dispel the myths and innuendo advocated every year at this time, it appears that the Canadian government is having little effect in convincing individual European countries that the message from those animal rights groups is nothing more than propaganda.
