Simms warns: Canada’s Sovereignty at Risk
April 18, 2007
Ottawa, ON. Scott Simms, MP for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor and Liberal Fisheries Critic, is calling on the federal government to extend the Employment Insurance (EI) program for fishers who are unable to fish due to heavy ice conditions along the Northeast coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Simms said the majority of fishers EI will run out this week and they will have no income. The current ice conditions have many small vessels blocked in and unless the wind direction changes it could be days, and possibly weeks, before fishers will be able to get fishing gear in the water.
