Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.
He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.
He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

Simms Pleased with Conservatives Reversal on Youth Program
April 27, 2005, Ottawa, ON;
Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor, is pleased to hear that
Canadian Heritage Minister, Bev Oda, has reversed an earlier decision to cancel the Encounters with Canada Program.
“After a relentless campaign from many citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador we have succeeded in convincing the
Conservative government to reverse their intentions to eliminate this great Canadian program,” says Simms. “Students from
this province and abroad wrote, phoned, and spoke to me in person urging me to continue fighting for a program that meant so
much to them as young Canadians.”
Simms congratulates the many teachers and volunteer organizers around Newfoundland and Labrador who help bring this truly
unique experience to our students and applauds them on rallying to the cause in opposition.
Joe Philpott, NL Provincial President of Encounters with Canada, and Principal of St. Paul’s High School in Gander, is
pleased that the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Hon. Bev Oda, has changed her mind about cutting funding to the program.
“I am very pleased that funding will continue to the program after our campaign in the province and across Canada to save the
program. However, we still have concerns about the future of the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa, which houses
the students and is scheduled to be sold. As well, there was no detail about the funding and how long it will last nor the area in
the Canadian Heritage Department that will be responsible for the program,” says Philpott.
