Simms calls on all Newfoundland and Labrador MPs to support C-269
May 03, 2007
Ottawa, ON.- Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor will be voting in favour of Bill C-269, an Act to amend the Employment Insurance Act, which will be debated in the House of Commons today.
“These changes to the Employment Insurance Act will have a very positive effect on employment insurance users in my rural riding”, says Simms. “If passed, these amendments will greatly impact many of my constituents who are involved in seasonal and part-time employment who utilize the program”.
This bill proposes to eliminate the two-week waiting period for benefits, increase employment insurance benefits, reduce by 70 the number of hours of work required to qualify for employment insurance, and will increase the period of sick leave from 15 to 50 weeks.
“Many of these changes were recommended by stakeholders and will go a long way in removing some of the inequities of the program”, said Simms.
Simms is calling on all Newfoundland and Labrador Members of Parliament to support this important Bill, as well as Members of Parliament across the country, regardless of their party’s stand on the issue.
