Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.

He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.

Simms Calls for Extension of EI Pilot Project

June 1, 2006, Ottawa, ON;

Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls Windsor is today calling on the Minister of Human Resources & Social Development, Honourable Diane Finley, to extend the EI pilot project introduced by the Liberal government in 2004 that provides workers eligible for regular benefits with an additional five weeks of benefits in regions of high unemployment (10% or more). The pilot project is scheduled to end on June 4, 2006.

“Over the past few years there has been a significant decrease in the number of weeks of employment gained, and a corresponding decrease in the number of weeks of EI benefits available. The additional five weeks gained through this pilot project often bridged the person to the next job,” says Simms. “I would like to see this pilot project extended until a full review of the report on the benefits of the program is made public.

In particular, seasonal employment presents unique challenges for workers due to the nature of seasonal work which is often located in rural or remote regions of our province offering limited alternative employment options in the off-season. Some workers must regularly turn to EI benefits for support to make ends meet between periods of seasonal employment.

This project was already extended by the Liberal government for an additional year to address the annual income gap faced by workers with limited work alternatives. This provided more that 100,000 individuals to receive up to $1,000 more per claim. Time is running out and the Conservative government needs to act immediately.

Scott Simms, MP for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor, will vote in favour of Bill C-219, an Act to amend the Income Tax Act, which will be debated in the House of Commons today.

The proposed changes to the Income Tax Act will allow a deduction of $1000 if the taxpayer performed in the taxation year at least 100 hours More
