Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.
He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.
He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

Simms to defend Seal Hunt
June 6, 2006, St. John's, NL;
Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-
Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor is going to Europe to defend Canada’s seal hunt. Simms will
appear before the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe’s Environmental
Committee in Paris on June 8th.
Simms accepted an invitation to defend the seal hunt after reading a report to the European
Parliament drafted by Mr. Pasquale Nessa of Italy. The report professes a strong moralistic
bias against the seal hunt, similar to the Humane Society of the United States. It does not
reflect scientific evidence that is publicly available.
Groups such as animal rights groups and individuals consistently promote misinformation
and rhetoric with respect to the seal hunt, claiming it is not being conducted in a humane
manner.
“In light of the fact that European Parliamentarians are being misinformed, I feel compelled
to stand up for the seal industry that has been a way of life in this province for hundreds of
years,” says Simms.
“As a Newfoundlander and as a Parliamentarian representing hundreds who are actively
involved in the seal hunt, I feel both an obligation and a responsibility to challenge the
erroneous information and to provide the economic rationale for the seal hunt,” stated
Simms.
