Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.

He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.

Simms Demands Immediate Action on Visitor Visa Requirements.

September 19, 2007

Gander, NL – Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor, is demanding that the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration take immediate action to remove the Visitor Visa requirements for the citizens of the EU member countries. A recent report from the European Commission is also demanding action by Canada.

“This is particularly important for the Gander airport and the Town of Gander who have been struggling with the government’s citizenship regulations”, said Simms.

A pilot project had been in place that allowed Polish passengers to stopover in Gander by using a block visa system which went without incident. On request, the government refused to extend the program or lift the restrictions.

Recently, the Gander International Airport Authority had a fantastic opportunity from a Polish airline to use Gander as a stopover for passengers traveling to southern vacation destinations. They were forced to cancel an agreement with a Polish airline that had a severe financial impact on the authority.

“Now is the time to review the visitor visa regulations for EU countries and remove the requirements”, Simms says. “This will increase airline stopovers from these countries and generally improve local economies”.
