Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.

He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.

He stated that he was pleased that Canada had banned shark finning, where sharks were caught, the fins were cut off, and the shark was thrown....More

Simms Welcomes Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to Gander

Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-
Windsor welcomes the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to Gander formeetings on fishery issues and he is pleased to be a member of the committee. The twoareas to be discussed at the meetings are boat stability and the Canadian seal hunt.

“This is an excellent opportunity for all stakeholders to bring forward issues or concerns related to boat stability and the seal hunt,” says Simms. “A number of fishers in my riding have concerns around the rules for boat stability, in particular, the fishery boat length requirements. As well, there are a number of areas concerning the seal hunt that need to be addressed.”

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans is in Newfoundland and Labrador this week conducting meetings in St. Anthony and Gander. The Committee will present their findings and recommendations to the House of Commons.

“I am looking forward to successful meetings on both topics with meaningful input from the fishers,” says Simms.

The meetings in Gander will take place at the Albatross Hotel, Tuesday, November 7th. The first session, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., will be on th

Scott Simms, MP for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor, will vote in favour of Bill C-219, an Act to amend the Income Tax Act, which will be debated in the House of Commons today.

The proposed changes to the Income Tax Act will allow a deduction of $1000 if the taxpayer performed in the taxation year at least 100 hours More
