Simms Calls for Federal Support of Pensioners

December 8, 2009 Ottawa, ON:

Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor is calling on the federal government to act swiftly and join with the other stakeholders to help resolve the current situation facing pensioners formerly employed at the AbitibiBowater paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor.

It has been one year since AbitibiBowater announced it would shut down operations at the Grand Falls-Windsor paper mill. The subsequent closure placed 450 workers and 250 forestry workers out of work and significantly impacted the Central NL region’s economy. Those formerly employed by the company continue to fight for the pensions they have been making payments into for decades.

The federal government is hiding behind the question of jurisdiction to justify their non-involvement. “The federal government has a vital role to play if a fair conclusion is to be reached and to prevent similar situations from ever occurring again” states Simms. “The workers of the Grand Falls-Windsor mill and all Canadian workers who unfortunately lose their jobs in rough economic times must benefit in full from the decades of paying into private pension plans”.

Simms is demanding the federal government implement both short-term and long-term measures. First, the federal government must immediately meet with representatives from the union and the company to discuss any assistance it can provide to ensure former employees of the Grand Falls-Windsor AbitibiBowater mill receive their pensions. Second, the federal government must look into amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act to further protect pensions in future cases of bankruptcy.

“The former employees of AbitibiBowater and the forestry sector have demonstrated their amazing resiliency over the last year” says Simms. “Instead of ignoring Canadian pensioners, it is now up to the federal government to step in and take immediate action”.
