Mr. Speaker, I am indeed proud of Jeremy Wedallas, a 12-year-old from Erin, Ontario, who recently wrote me a letter, visited my office, and was welcomed by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans as well.

He outlined his concerns about ocean ecology. Jeremy pointed out three areas of importance to him related to the preservation of our fishery: shark finning, bycatch and bottom trawling.

Simms calls on all MPs to support C-219

Ottawa, February 28, 2008

Scott Simms, MP for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor, will vote in favour of Bill C-219, an Act to amend the Income Tax Act, which will be debated in the House of Commons today.

The proposed changes to the Income Tax Act will allow a deduction of $1000 if the taxpayer performed in the taxation year at least 100 hours but less than 200 hours or $2000 for over 200 hours of volunteer service as an ambulance technician, a firefighter, or a person who assists in the search or rescue of individuals or in any other emergency situation.

“I recognize and commend the volunteer emergency responders for the vital roles they play in fire prevention, safety, and saving lives in our communities”, said Simms. “The passing of Bill C-219 will be a small way of recognizing their efforts because one could never put a dollar figure on the service these volunteers carry out in their communities”.

Simms is calling on all Newfoundland and Labrador Members of Parliament and all Members of Parliament across the country, regardless of party position, to support this important Bill.

“If passed, these changes will have a very positive effect on Emergency Services Volunteers who risk their lives daily for the betterment of their communities in my riding and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” stated Simms.
